La campagne pour le référendum sur le Projet de Constitution européenne est bien lancée. Les sondages indiquent même qu’une majorité de nos concitoyens seraient opposés à ce Projet. En ce qui nous concerne, notre position sur une constitution européenne est déjà connue : en participant Forum Social Européen de 2003 nous réaffirmions sans ambages que le principe de laïcité devait y figurer comme principe universel d’égalité et de liberté, comme garant de la coexistence entre les différents courants de la pensée et du renforcement de la démocratie en affirmant que les religions sont une affaire privée par rapport aux Etats.

Or dans le Projet de constitution qui est proposé à nos suffrages, que ce soit dans l’article I-2,portant sur les valeurs de l’Union européenne ou dans l’article I-52 sur les statuts des Eglises, ou dans l’article II-70 sur la liberté de pensée, de conscience et de religion, le principe de laïcité n’est jamais mentionné. Bien au contraire ce dernier article par exemple s’inscrit en totale opposition à la loi française de 1905. Avec un texte trop apologétique sur la « liberté de religion » on risque fort de dévier vers les pratiques en vigueur aux Etats-Unis, et glisser rapidement de la démocratie républicaine et laïque vers une démocratie façonnée par les communautarismes.
