Cette anthologie « pour une lecture matérialiste du fait religieux » réalisée par l'association Athéisme International, parcourt l'histoire de la philosophie, tout en faisant place à des textes plus littéraires, poétiques (Rimbaud, Prévert, Heine...), ou encore juridiques, avec la loi de 1905 sur la laïcité. L'ouvrage commence avec les philosophes grecs, Epicure montrant que « l'äme est un corps ». Il s'achève par un texte du poète Saint-John Perse, représentatif de sa quête d'un « universel humanisme ».
L'un des intérêts de cette somme est d'ailleurs de stimuler le débat sur l'humanisme, la religion pouvant être définie comme relation de l'homme à son essence « comme un autre être » (Feuerbach). Un ouvrage utile dans le combat contre les communautarismes religieux, si l'on veut bien comprendre, avec Marx, que la religion est aussi, et peut-être d'abord, « soupir de la créature opprimée »

Pas d'auteur ( sinon un étrange " Athéisme International " ) pour cette anthologie de textes ( fondamentaux ou plus légers ) de la pensée matérialiste athée...
On regrette les assimilations hâtives ( Galilée, Voltaire ou Spinoza étaient-ils athées ? ), mais au fil des pages, on trouve quelques pépites : Xénophane de Colophon, Marx, bien sûr, le Dialogue de Diderot et de la Maréchale, Feuerbach, etc.
