On regrette les assimilations hâtives ( Galilée, Voltaire ou Spinoza étaient-ils athées ? ), mais au fil des pages, on trouve quelques pépites : Xénophane de Colophon, Marx, bien sûr, le Dialogue de Diderot et de la Maréchale, Feuerbach, etc.
Nous sommes très honorés que Le Monde des Religions ait réservé à notre anthologie une place dans ses colonnes, quand on sait la qualité de ses écrits sur le sujet. On regrettera cependant la lecture quelque peu hâtive de son rédacteur.
D’abord L’opium du peuple n’est pas anonyme, mais le fruit d’un collectif, l’association Athéisme International, nullement étrange puisque régie par la loi de 1901, signalée dès l’ouverture du livre ; ensuite pour ce type d’ouvrage, qui se rapproche d’un manuel, l’Index ( auteurs et documents ) nous a paru mieux approprié qu’une Table ; enfin dans la Présentation il est bien précisé que les auteurs cités ne sont pas tous des humanistes athées ; notre souci, bien au contraire, a été de rendre compte que la critique de la croyance en Dieu, et de son support, les religions, a toujours été présente dans l’histoire de l’humanité ; si bien que toute assimilation sectaire à l’athéisme eût été contraire à notre démarche et d’un irrespect inconcevable. Galilée n’était pas athée ; ou peut-être faisait-il semblant de ne pas l’être ; comme il fit semblant d’abjurer pour mieux continuer à écrire ses observations du ciel et pour sauver sa peau ; tout comme Spinoza, excommunié et fuyant la doctrine des rabbins parce qu’il pensait qu’aucun homme de bon sens ne pouvait l’admettre, et tenu de composer son Traité théologico-politique pour démentir ceux qui l’accusaient d’être athée.
